Dada

Dadaism is a 20th century art movement that began in Zurich as a response and rejection of society, war, and uniformity. Jean Arp (Dadaist Sculptor) stated they were "revolted by the butchery of the war" which caused them to reject all that was previously explored as a way to embrace randomness and distance themselves from tradition. The word "Dada" doesn't mean anything according to Tristan Tzara's 1918 Dada manifesto, and is considered a nonsensical word. This idea spread into all sorts of creative outlets including typography. Letters were cut, torn, thrown, layered and arranged in ways which denied uniformity. "Every page should explode, either because of its deep seriousness, or because of its vortex vertigo, newness, timelessness, crushing humour enthusiasm of its principles or the way it is printed" (Tristan Tzara Dada Manifesto). Dada encouraged readers to look more at the explosive non-linear letters of the typeface than try to decipher the meaning of the words.
